Summer Computer Camp Instructor

The Tech Camp Instructor is responsible for fostering a FUN and SAFE environment while helping students learn new technology and think creatively, and ensuring all students are meeting set curriculum goals. The ideal candidate would have expertise in one or more areas of technology pertinent to the program.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Envision Lead Grow is a Norfolk-based non-profit organization designed to introduce entrepreneurship to middle school girls through camps, mentoring, webinars and conferences. Through this repeated exposure and practice, girls develop entrepreneurial, STEAM-infused skills that allow them to contribute to and stimulate local economies.

Envision Lead Grow‘s mission is to increase the rate of entrepreneurship and break the cycle of poverty for 1,000 middle school girls in underserved communities in the U.S. by 2020. We are committed to helping them build their future through entrepreneurship by creating a community to support their success.

Angela D. Reddix is the President and CEO of ARDX, a multi-million-dollar healthcare management and IT consulting firm based in Norfolk, Virginia.

In 2016, Angela created the Envision Lead Grow movement, an online platform designed to support and encourage entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey.

Angela values education and is determined to share her knowledge with you.

Anyssa Reddix is a published author, speaker, and mentor to young girls. Sharing Angela’s passion for entrepreneurship, she jumped into Envision Lead Grow with both feet.

Anyssa is the Program Manager for Envision Lead Grow. She is in charge of organizing the stops along the 7-City Bus Tour. She has put together the team of counselors that will travel from city to city, she will be overseeing how they carry out the curriculum, “The 8 Seeds to Success in Business,” as well as organizing the logistics to get the bus on the road.

In 2016, the idea of the 7-City Bus Tour was just that. An idea. In 2017, thanks to the support, the time and the generosity of so many people, the first ever Envision Lead Grow cross-country tour was an overwhelming success. The national Envision Lead Grow 7-City Bus Tour kicked off the Envision Lead Grow entrepreneur program in the summer of 2017, making stops in 7 different cities (Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Memphis, TN; Norfolk, VA; Philadelphia, PA; Richmond, VA; and Greensboro, NC) across the United States. The ELG team shared its fast-paced, fun-filled curriculum, “The 8 Seeds to Success in Business”, written by Dr. Angela Reddix Founder and CEO herself, during a week-long summer camp in each city.

In 2018, ELG plans to expand its reach by serving two more regions- Bowling Green, KY; and Charleston, WV. Rather than touring each city like we did in 2017, in the summer of 2018, a total of 250 girls will travel from all branches to our home city of Norfolk to begin or expand their "8 Seeds to Success in Business" growth, together.

Summer Immersion
The Envision Lead Grow program begins HERE, at one of our entrepreneurial immersion summer camps. Middle school girls from around your community will come together at a sleepaway camp to learn the building blocks of becoming an entrepreneur. Many of the girls start the session as strangers and will leave as great friends. Over the course of the summer program, participants will take part in exercises to help them think bigger, to apply entrepreneurial, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) infused skills to everyday life and to make better decisions. At the end of the summer immersion camp, these young women will leave with a solid business idea, a Passion Pitch they can use to sell their idea to others and confidence to take their company - and community - to the next level.

9-Month Mentoring Support
The Summer Immersion summer camp experience is just the beginning of the process for these budding Girl Bosses. We partner with adult mentors in each city where Envision Lead Grow sets up. After the summer camp is finished, female volunteers within the community step in to guide, to support and to be a sounding board for these young entrepreneurs. Over the course of the school year, the mentors check in with their young mentees to keep them on track.

All City, All Girls Webinars
It can be lonely to be in business for yourself, so Envision Lead Grow designed a way to ensure these young entrepreneurs never feel isolated. Aside from the check-ins with their mentors, ELG girls and mentors have the chance to meet each other through virtual meetings. Through these monthly video calls, the girls get to learn from ELG Founder Angela Reddix, as well as, each other. We believe that it is important to have a network of support through not only their ELG branch city mentor, but other ELG peers and mentors from all branches, too.

The Entrepreneur Institute
Envision Lead Grow will reward business owners who are committed to making their companies thrive. The Entrepreneur Institute is a multi-day field trip that will bring together the leaders of Fortune 500 companies, mentors and business educators. It’s an all-expenses paid trip for the girls who participate in the mentoring sessions, the All-City Webinars and the ELG business challenges. ELG Girl Bosses who are engaged in the program can earn a spot in The Entrepreneur Institute.

OTHER CAMP INFO: Girls will learn the "8 Seeds to Success in Business" curriculum, written and developed by Dr. Angela D. Reddix, Founder, President and CEO of ARDX, a mult-million dollar management and technology consulting company based in Norfolk, Virginia. This summer, the "8 Seeds" curriculum has been enhanced to include STEAM-infused exercises and activities. In addition to entrepreneurial, STEAM-infused practices, girls will have opportunity for choice time activities, such as yoga, drama (daily improvisation games), singing, dancing, creative writing, visual art, sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball, or tennis), swimming, blogging, cooking, and/or hiking. The girls will have the opportunity to explore Hampton Roads and experience some form of culture that is unique or unfamiliar to them. By the end of the week of camp, each girl will have a venture with a business plan ready to begin making sales, increased level of self-efficacy, greater self-control, conscientiousness, evaluation of short-term and long-term goals, intuition for decision making, and the ability to pitch her business venture successfully.

The ELG Class of 2019 will begin with Summer Immersion. This year, Summer Immersion is a one-week long, all-expenses paid, sleepaway camp hosted at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Girls currently in the 4th-6th grade are invited to apply! Once girls are in the program, they can continue with us until they graduate from high school.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The Road Less Traveled as an organization was founded by Jim and Donna Stein in 1991, and has been successfully running safe, exciting, life-changing trips for teens ever since. Both Jim and Donna are still the current directors, and are integrally involved in every single aspect of the company. In the summer, they are on call 24/7, available both to parents as well as to our leaders in the field.

We are an ACA accredited organization with an impeccable track record. We believe in the process of accreditation. It allows us to compare our standards to other professionals in the industry. Our accreditation allows us to follow specific standards related to leader screening including use of application forms, reference checks, personal interviews, work history review, and background checks.

Many years ago, we were the first company serving young adults to require that all leaders have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) medical certification. WFR training is far more advanced than standard first aid or wilderness first aid. In addition to this certification, we carry extensive first aid kits on all of our programs that include antibiotics and epinephrine. Contents, protocols, and standing orders are reviewed and updated every year by our Medical Director who is an MD.

Since our inception, RLT has been on the cutting edge of technological advances in communication. We began carrying Iridium satellite phones on all of our programs as soon as they were available. Today we continue to carry the latest in emergency communication systems. According to geographic location, programs are equipped with satellite phones, ground-to-air radios, and/or cellular phones providing the possibility of 24-hour access to medical help in case of emergency.

Trip Leader/Co-Leader

Travel domestically and/or internationally with a group of high-school and/or middle-school students, monitoring and facilitating community service, language/cultural immersion, and/or wilderness adventure trips

Minimum Qualifications
• Minimum of 21 years of age
• Minimum of a bachelor's degree or in the process of completing a degree. Equivalent experience working with teenagers in related field will be considered if not currently enrolled in school
• Experience Previous program leader experience working with and or teaching young people age ranging in age between 12-19. Knowledge of and experience with group dynamics, teaching or facilitating groups, supervision of meal planning, food preparation and cooking, managing logistics. Ability to teach program specific skills, environmental awareness, and related scientific, cultural, and historical knowledge pertaining to the regions through which you will travel and their relationship to each other.
• Strong Physical Condition
• Current CPR for the professional rescuer
• Current Wilderness First Responder, WEMT or EMT certification
• Current Red Cross lifeguard or Swiftwater rescue certifications preferred but not mandatory
• Current unrestricted valid drivers license with no major convictions during the previous three year period; driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, hit and run, homicide or assault with a motor vehicle, drag racing, operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent, license suspended or revoked within the previous three year period for accidents and or moving violations. • For Adventure Programs: Knowledge of three or more wilderness travel methods. Whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, international trekking, biking, backpacking, technical rock or ice climbing and mountaineering. Mandatory requirements for adventure trips include: the ability to lead groups of students on backpacking trips of three to eight days, ability to comfortably lead through remote wilderness areas. This includes, but is not limited to, backpacking preparations, backcountry travel, route finding, campsite selection, equipment maintenance, Leave No Trace camping techniques in desert and alpine terrain and proper protocol in dense bear country.

All leaders must possess the ability to make prudent decisions in adverse conditions. International Service Learning and Language Immersion Programs: Leaders and must be highly proficient or fluent in the spoken language of the program country (Spanish, etc.) and have extensive experience with community service, international travel, managing multiple responsibilities abroad, experience and/or living abroad, cultural immersion. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: We incorporate sailing with marine science and fun; play on-the-water games like Quidditch, Tennis Ball Tag, Turbo Basketball, Highway, and more! For 2016, we have partnered with the Virginia Air & Space Museum to provide a math, science and sailing adventure for children ages 8 to 12. Every first Friday we will host a Pirate Day, where campers get to dress like pirates and do various pirate activities, including a treasure hunt. During each session, we will have a Parent Day where parents are encouraged to come watch what their child has learned throughout the camp, and of course take pictures! After completing each course, sailors are sent home with a card showing which objectives and goals they have accomplished throughout the course.

They are both Harvard-educated and their 5 children were the inspiration behind the creation of this revolutionary new summer program

Brain Chase is a 6-week summer learning challenge disguised as a massive global treasure hunt for 2nd−8th graders. A golden globe has been buried somewhere on earth – and it contains the key to a safe deposit box holding a $10,000 college scholarship fund. Participants who complete an hour of online summer learning activities each day will unlock secret animated webisodes that hold the clues to the globe’s whereabouts. This fun and educational camp is for boys and girls ages 8-13. Participants will get the chance to “join the army” for the week and experience life as a Civil War soldier. Experiences include camp life, drills and battles. This year’s theme will focus on the western battles in 1863.

This annual Civil War themed kids' summer camp has been running for over 20 years. The camp allows children to choose to be a Union or Confederate soldier. They are given a cap gun, caps, Civil War replica hat, canteen, and haversack. Children are taught about the lives of Civil War soldiers and "join" the army themselves. They learn how to march and fight like Civil War soldiers and recreate historic battles through the week while interacting with costumed interpreters.
The focus of this year's camps will be the battles fought in the "Western" theater of the war in 1863. Children will learn about the armies, the lives of the soldiers who participated, and the battles fought during this historic campaign. This camp brings kids back year after year and is a hit with parents and kids!

CAMP FACILITIES: Our traditional camp buildings range from cozy screened cabins to large lodge-style gathering places. Many of the original camp structures remain, such as the 1920s dining hall (where girls gather three times each day to eat family style, home-cooked meals) and West Lodge (where performances delight campers of every age). CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Founded in 1927 by Nannie West, Camp Mont Shenandoah is one of the oldest girls’ camps in Virginia. The exceptional Mont Shenandoah experience has kept families returning for generations and inspired numerous campers to return as counselors. Camp Mont Shenandoah’s mission is to create an excellent summer camp experience for girls. In a safe and caring environment, our camp provides the setting and structure each girl needs to grow -- physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

Through cabin living, fun, challenging activities, relationships with peers and staff, and longstanding traditions, we promote life skills that instill confidence, develop a girl’s sense of self and foster independence. Campers leave Mont Shenandoah having learned the guiding principles of our five virtues: Love, Loyalty, Friendship, Sportsmanship, and Spiritual Awareness. Camp Mont Shenandoah boasts a high rate of returning program staff, almost all of whom are former campers or junior counselors. Counselors are selected based on their maturity, stability, dependability, leadership skills, ability to relate to girls of all ages, sense of humor as well as their knowledge and demonstrated skills in the activity for which they are hired to teach. The camper-to-staff ratio is five to one, assuring each girl ample individual attention

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: In 2005, Camp Mont Shenandoah started The Camp Spirit Scholarship to help campers attend camp that may not otherwise be able to due to financial constraints. The Camp Spirit Scholarship is a fund within Community Foundation for Rockbridge, Bath and Alleghany, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

OTHER CAMP INFO: If horses are your passion, you’ll be able to enjoy a comprehensive horseback riding program designed for girls of all ages and skill levels at Cabell Stable, our equestrian facility built in 2001. Our goals at Cabell Stable at Camp Mont Shenandoah are to improve riding skills, teach proper horse care and barn maintenance, learn to appreciate and value horses, and lastly (but certainly not least!) to have fun. From the moment they set foot in Cabell Stable, campers are taught to respect each horse and how to properly handle them on the ground and in the saddle. Our lessons are based on hunt seat equitation that focuses on the rider’s form. We limit our horseback riding classes to no more than five girls in the ring at a time, ensuring adequate instruction for each camper. Safety is of primary importance at Cabell Stable. When mounted, all girls must wear an approved (ATSM-SEI) protective helmet, long pants (or breeches) and boots with a heel. (We have helmets for campers to borrow if they do not have their own).

Our programs have been nominated for the 2012 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. Infamous Robotics is the only robotics educational company to teach robotics for the Smithsonian Institution.

OTHER CAMP INFO: This first level (a combined week camp of levels 1 and 2) will use a range of hands-on exercises so children grasp a more in depth knowledge of electrical, mechanical and software concepts related to the robotics field. The hands-on exercises are designed for students to gain a better knowledge of the components related to robotics. Students will also use robots in various exercises to gain a better understanding of challenges in foreign environments. No previous robotics experience is required or necessary. This level will go into far more detail than any Lego robot course and is far more educational and challenging.

A focus on electrical circuits will be emphasized through circuit design, build and testing. Students will be introduced to important engineering tools needed in the robot building process. In this class, each child will build and test an electrical robot that does not need to be programmed. Students will then compete on the final day with the robot they each built.

CAMP FACILITIES: Summit has approx. 30 traditional wooden cabins with electric and private facilities in each cabin. Our main buildings include our newly refinished dining hall, air-conditioned recreational hall, our medical facility, and a newly built outdoor pavilion. Summit utilizes three A frame buildings for our arts programs, a wilderness treehouse with camp fire area for cookouts, newly resurfaced basketball/tennis courts, high/low ropes course with climbing wall, heated pool, private lake, nature fields with a farm area, martial arts dojo, go-kart track with 3 karts. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Summit Camp is a co-ed sleepaway camp for ages 8-19 years with issues of attention: AD/HD, HFA/Asperger’s Disorder, and/or learning differences. Using the frame of a traditional sleepaway camp, we create platforms of success where our campers can experience outcomes such as improved self-esteem, lasting friendships, and increased independence. This is accomplished through a well-orchestrated and expertly staffed backdrop to a largely traditional camp experience- guided challenges, waterfront, adventure course, and more. Our goal is always to help young people develop the curiosity to explore, the confidence to discover, and the character to grow with excellence. Our small group ratio of 6:1 ensures each camper gets personal attention and enthusiastic support to address their passions and interests.

The Learnatory Esports & Coding STEAM Camps are for those passionate about video games and excited to code! National Esports Champions teach rising 3rd thru 11th graders proven strategies and provide personal VOD analyses of their gameplay in: Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, Rocket League. Coding & Game Design STEAM Summer Camps include: SCRATCH, JavaScript, Python, C# thru Unity.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Through The Learnatory In-School, After-School, Home-School, Weekend, Summer Camps, and online programs, The Learnatory, has served over 12,000 college-bound youth and teens in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City effectively and significantly boost their academic, personal, and career development. Each camper receives a proprietary PEP (Prescribed Educational Plan) for every class they take that states exactly what skills they will learn and documents at the end how well they learned them.

Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, and it is important for kids to understand and be able to work with and understand the technology around them.

CAMP FACILITIES: University classroom.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: In this third and fourth level summer camp, your child will learn fundamentals about mechanical engineering and software engineering concepts related to robotics. Your child will learn about important mechanical concepts related to motors, gears and torque. Students will be shown the importance and application of math in robotics. Software concepts the student will learn about are programming a robot, reading input from a sensor, controlling outputs from a microcontroller, such as indicators and motors.

Each student will learn to build a sensor, build a robot and program it to accomplish a task. The students will learn to program a robot as it is done at the collegiate level through our custom designed exercises that are hands-on and at the same time give them a thorough understanding of what they are building and how it works. Certificates will be presented on final day, following the robot competition.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Once your child has completed this level and RE1&2, they will be eligible to enroll in the Robotics Inventors Club, an 8 months long process that takes students through the engineering design process to build a unique robot that they present at the museum in DC.

CAMP FACILITIES: Summer Scholars enjoy academic classes by day on the campus of Emory & Henry College. Students are exposed to a college-like setting and are allowed use of college facilities such as the science and computer labs, sand volleyball court, swimming pool, tennis courts, golf course, fitness center, basketball court and more!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: 2016 is the 37th annual Summer Scholars Institute & Leadership Program. Classes are taught by Emory & Henry College professors and talented locals. Staff are trained to be sensitive to student needs as well as being certified in Title IX training. The camps was awarded Best Summer Camp in Best of Virginia.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Summer Scholars Leadership Program is also available for interested rising tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade high school students. This accelerated program will provide skills and tools to help students become better prepared for leadership roles in high school as well as college. Students will have the opportunity to select from several different modules in the Leadership Program to include Servant Leadership, Leadership in Action, Faith Based Leadership and the Outdoor Adventure Program. CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: You may request assistance in providing scholarships for students in your school or district. Many school divisions assist students with either full or partial tuition for the Summer Scholars Institute & Leadership Program. The tuition for 2016 is $525. A deposit of $50 is due with each application.

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:
Positions are available for Junior Counselors and Counselors. The residential component is an important segment of the Summer Scholars experience. Counselors provide a comfortable and safe environment for learning and living, while meeting the student’s unique social and emotional needs. Students are provided opportunities to build relationships with their peers from different backgrounds, and, most of all, the opportunity to have fun! The role of the Junior Counselor is to assist counselors and instructors in all aspects of the Summer Scholars Program.

Junior Counselors will work with students who are in the Summer Scholars Institute who are rising 6th-9th grades. During the morning, afternoon, and evening academic classes, Junior Counselors will also be assigned to classrooms to assist instructors. Junior counselors are to be a role-model for all students.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our Cabin Village has eight modern-rustic cabins that sleep a total of 100, with an adjacent dining hall, large modern bathhouse, and modern air-conditioned/heated meeting facility. Our Sukkah Village sleeps up to 48 in 6 Sukkahs. Sukkahs are roofed platforms with screened half-walls and 8 beds each. We have a low ropes course, a 5 acre lake for swimming, canoeing and fishing, a prayer labyrinth, an extensive trail system, 8 large group fire circles, National Forest access, and incredible stargazing.

Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp & Retreat Center has a small year-round staff of 3 full time and 4 part time/seasonal full time. We hire 15-20 counselors for our Summer Camp program. During your LIT! training week (Part One), you will develop skills, awareness and experience that will put you into action as a quality leader and team member. YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp & Retreat Center is a year-round retreat center and summer camp. Our main property is in Fort Valley VA and we also operate an adult retreat center in Strasburg VA. We are busy year round with rental groups and planned programming in faith, education, and renewal - youth retreats, campus ministries, men’s and women’s groups, school groups, conference meetings, scouting trips, family reunions, and special events. Our group minimum is 10, and we can accommodate large groups of 200+. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Active Learning Services, Ltd operates enrichment programs designed to stimulate creative thinking, improve thinking, logic and memory skills and give children "thinking alternatives" to sports camps and other summer programs. Our staff is, comprised of the best children's chess instructors in North America! The USA Chess camps are uniquely qualified to cater to the needs of the advanced scholastic player as well as the true beginner. USA Chess hit its first milestone in the summer of 2000 producing the largest chess camp ever held in the United States, with more than 250 students enrolled. CAMP FACILITIES: We have 18 FJ dinghy sailboats on a beautiful dock ready to launch and sail. With no obstructing buildings surrounding us we get a nice breeze year round for teaching and racing in dinghy sailboats.

Our teaching staff are US Sailing Certified Instructors. CAMP FACILITIES: Campers live in modern cozy dorm rooms (electricity, AC, and bathrooms – flush toilets & showers!) with 2-3 close-age peers. Each floor is unique, but all include common areas — inside with big comfy couches for relaxing, memorizing lines, and hanging out with your friends.

Staff live in private rooms on each floor so that they are nearby, attentive, and available, while still allowing campers an appropriate level of privacy.

Adventure surrounds us! There’s a river, running trails, a basketball court, a volleyball court, riverside firepits for s’mores, and a meadow for stargazing!

Founding Artistic Director Jeanne Harrison has taught for The Folger Shakespeare Library, Catholic University, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Loyola University (MD), The Chapin School (NYC) and Interlochen Center for the Arts (MI), where she directed the Shakespeare program. Jeanne has worked in camping for 28 years, directed two other camps, is a certified Camp Director (American Camping Association), Wilderness First Responder (SOLO), and an Instructor with the American Red Cross. Jeanne has also served as a judge for the Helen Hayes Awards.

CAMP FACILITIES: Housed within a state of the art 23,000 square foot facility that is open six days a week during the school year and weekdays during the summer. The Center offers dance, art, theater, after school programs and recreation. It is internet friendly and has become known as the "place to be" for special events including weddings, receptions, bar mitzvahs, baby showers, dinners and many other quaint social happenings.

CAMP FACILITIES: Through our diverse array of buildings and spaces, we can accommodate up to 130 overnight guests in winterized facilities, and house indoor meetings for up to 160. Your group can take advantage of our great hiking trails, boating on the reservoir, swimming pool, ball-fields, archery range, ziplines and observatory. Or have the whole event outside, at our picnic shelters, family campsites, or outdoor chapel!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Founded in 1964 by the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America, Makemie Woods teaches essential relationship skills in a radically accepting Christian community. In the context of both traditional overnight camps or high-adventure trip camps, campers discover the joy of making friends that can last a lifetime. Traditional activities include swimming, canoeing, campfires, crafts, Bible study, and other recreation. There are focus camps for music and drama, and high adventure for rafting, rock climbing, caving, and more.

Makemie Woods teaches essential relationship skills in a radically accepting Christian community. Our staff is made up of approximately 30 dedicated, Christ-loving, fun individuals, recruited from the US and from all over the world. Counselors are at least 18 years old and in most cases have finished at least one year of college. Every staff member is certified in first aid and CPR at a minimum. Many staff members have more extensive certification such as lifeguarding, canoe instruction, water safety instruction, wilderness first aid, etc. We have an EMT and several First Aid instructors on our staff. Each staff member submits an application, participates in an extensive interview, and undergoes a criminal background history check. References are required, and checked. Nothing is more important to us than your camper's safety!

As a certified member of the American Camp Association, Makemie Woods voluntarily adheres to over 600 standards for camping health and safety to ensure that your children receive the care and attention that they deserve. Makemie Woods is also part of the Christian Camp and Conference Association.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: YES campers (rising 11th and 12th graders) enjoy Makemie Woods fun and participate in group building, faith, and leadership development. Spend the first 10 days engaging in service projects and learning skills for working with children. In the last week, they'll see what's it's like to be a counselor, living and working with a younger camper group. Encouraged for campers who in the future seek to serve on the MW staff.

The DOVE program. This program (for anyone age 16 and rising from 11th grade) recruits and trains persons who are interested in serving as Volunteer Staff during the summer camp program at Makemie Woods. DOVEs are trained to specific tasks within the camp program, especially helping with campers with special needs.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Located between Williamsburg and Richmond VA, Makemie Woods offers an attractive setting for your next conference or retreat. We can serve up to 130 guests in seven winterized buildings, with flexible and functional meeting spaces, great dining, and 275 acres of hardwood forest, a reservoir, and many recreation opportunities to explore and enjoy!

Our facilities are available mid-August to mid-June to all groups without regard to race, sex, age or national origin for the following events:retreats, meetings, conferences, picnics, school trips, quilting groups, silent retreats, wilderness camping, nature study, family reunions, training events, environmental education, home school outings, scrapbooking retreats, , We offer a diverse range of programming activities which includes swimming, canoeing, archery, zip-lining and using our observatory to view stars and planets.

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:
Counselors:
At least 18 years old and one year out of high school. Serve as leaders and Christian role models to 4-7 campers per session, responsible for their welfare and guiding them through their daily routine. Salary: $220/wk

*Additional remuneration for lifeguard certification ($10/wk) and 21 or older with a clean driving record acceptable to our insurance company ($20/wk)

Cooperation Coach:
At least 18 years old and one year out of high school. Works one-on-one with campers who need additional attention to help them work through behavior issues or help them learn to contribute their group. This position is well-suited for someone studying psychology or child development, and can be used to fulfill internship requirements. Salary $230/week.

Lifeguards:
At least 18 years old and one year out of high school, Lifeguard certification required, WSI preferred. Serve as lifeguard at the pool, assist with other camp programs as assigned. Salary: $230/week

Medical Professional:
At least 21 years old, RN or EMT certification preferred, will consider someone with a BSN waiting for boards. Oversees medical care for campers and staff. Salary negotiable and dependent upon experience. Contact us for details.

Pool Manager:
At least 21 years old, Lifeguard certification required, WSI preferred. Responsible for maintaining the pool facility as well as lifeguarding, swim instruction. Salary: $240/week

Waterfront Director/Trip Manager:
At least 21 years old preferred, younger applicants (18+) can be considered. Lifeguard certification and whitewater canoeing experience required, canoe instruction certification preferred. Directs and maintains the boating program (canoes and rowboats), leads and/or packs off-site trips. Salary: $240/week

Recreation and Crafts Director:
At least 18 years old and one year out of high school. Directs daily program of crafts and recreation for campers of various ages, maintains supplies and inventory. Salary: $220/week

Digital Media:
At least 18 years old and one year out of high school. Responsible for taking daily photographs and video footage of camp, including group pictures for the week, compiling and editing footage for weekly dvd/cd's. Salary: $220/week

For all positions at Makemie Woods, room and board is valued at $180/week. Applicants with Makemie Woods Summer Staff experience receive additional remuneration. All staff will be required to have Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR Certification prior to the start of the staff training. Travel reimbursement for persons who come from more than 65 miles away up to $75.

CAMP FACILITIES: Your child will explore the entire Nauticus campus as they dive into STEM-based activities onboard our Harbor 20 sailboats, the Schooner Virginia, the Battleship Wisconsin and inside Nauticus!
